You've already compared liquid chalk against powder chalk. But there's a problem chalk alone can't solve: rings, parallettes, or a home pull-up bar that are still too smooth. In that case, the issue isn't your hands anymore, it's the surface itself. That's where grip tape comes in, an accessory that's still underused even though it completely changes the game on your own gear.
Two different problems, two complementary solutions
Grip tape and chalk are often mixed up, as if you had to choose between the two. In reality, they don't act on the same thing. Chalk dries out the sweat on the skin to improve hand grip. Grip tape, on the other hand, changes the surface of the equipment itself: it adds a non-slip layer where the metal or wood is still too smooth. On a grip already worn in through use, chalk alone is usually enough. On new gear or equipment you keep at home, combining both often gives you a grip that truly holds.
What creates the grip: it's about texture, not glue
Polished metal or varnished wood are smooth surfaces in the literal sense: under magnification, there's almost no texture for the skin to catch on, so only the pressure of your grip does the work. Grip tape works the opposite way. Its EVA foam has a porous, slightly grainy surface that multiplies the micro contact points with your hand. It's this porosity, not a sticky effect, that creates the grip: the skin settles into a texture instead of sliding across a flat surface. That's also why grip tape stays effective even without chalk on top, whereas a dry grip on a smooth bar isn't always enough.
Grip tape: designed above all for your own gear
Grip tape is primarily an accessory to install on your personal equipment: your rings, your parallettes, your bars, and any other gear you control and can maintain over time. On a public park bar, it's entirely possible to apply it to specific spots (the main grip zones); in dry weather, like summer, grip tape can hold for several weeks. The real limitation comes during wetter periods: rain and humidity eventually lift or degrade the foam, making future applications less reliable.
Where grip tape really makes a difference is on new or recently replaced gear: a smooth metal bar or parallettes with wooden handles that tend to slip.
This is typically the case with SWO grip tape, a 5-meter by 5-centimeter strip available in purple, black, or white, designed to be applied in a few minutes to your own rings, parallettes, or bar at home.
Applying it is simple: cut a strip to the length you need with scissors (around fifty centimeters is usually enough for one handle), wrap it around the equipment based on its diameter and the area to cover, then peel off the protective film to reveal the adhesive and press it into place.

The real-world combo: why stack them on your gear
On new parallettes or rings you've just set up at home, combining both becomes particularly worthwhile: chalk on your hands, grip tape on the handles. The result is a lock that doesn't budge, whether from sweat or from a surface that's still too smooth.
This is especially useful for demanding static figures like the planche or front lever, where the slightest slip ruins the whole set.

If you train on gear that's already well worn in, chalk alone may be enough depending on the material of your equipment.
